Meet Maria
From a young age, creativity has been Maria's guiding light. Growing up with ADHD, her path was anything but conventional, leading her through all manner of creative worlds, from acting and dancing to journalism and marketing. Now, Maria channels that boundless energy into writing, where her passion, curiosity, and imagination converge to bring magical tales to life. Each story she creates is a testament to the vibrant, ever-evolving journey of a storyteller who embraces every twist and turn along her path.
Once Upon A Time…
Born in Porto, Portugal, young Maria had a reputation as the 'weird kid' who could perform any scene from a Disney or Spielberg movie on command. Her passion for acting led her to drama school in 2004, where she immersed herself in contemporary theatre and graduated in 2007.
From there, her artistic journey took her through the realms of theatre and dance, where she performed across Portugal, graced TV screens, and taught in her own studio in Porto, but still her heart longed for a grander adventure. So, on a whim, she transformed a one-week holiday in London into a new life—though the shift was not without its trials. Left with nothing after being mugged upon arrival, she soon found herself alone and working in a coffee shop, her dreams feeling distant but never extinguished.
Over time, Maria rebuilt her life in London, making connections with those who believed in her artistic vision. By 2015, she published her first comic book and began attending conventions and book launches.Despite a less-than-stellar comic launch and her subsequent loss of motivation , she never gave up. Instead, she shifted to freelance movie journalism, covering film festivals and interviewing industry figures for Cinema Planet, which in turn rekindled her creative spark.
In 2018, a transformative tarot reading suggested she was a square peg trying to fit into a round hole—perhaps it was time to fully devote herself to her creative endeavors. Although hesitant, she eventually took the leap, leaving behind her roles in retail and journalism.
By late 2019, Maria found a new path forward as a social media manager and quickly advanced to marketing lead. Her continued education in business and marketing opened more doors to the freelance world, allowing her to support small businesses and fellow creatives. All the while, her dreams of writing remained dormant, waiting for just the right moment to emerge.
Finally, in early 2021, Maria embraced a new chapter and stepped into the role of full-time writer. Wielding her inner spark at long last, she began creating the magical universe that would become home to her stories—starting with the Little Friendly Witches children's book collection. Each story adds another layer to the enchanted world she's building. Soon, she will launch the first book of the collection while writing and narrating sleep stories set in the same world.
Looking back, that tarot reader's wisdom proved true after all. Embracing change and pursuing your passions can lead to truly magical outcomes.
